2007 THE TRADITION CONTINUES

The Saline girls’ team opened its 2007 season with a second place finish at the Rockford Invitational on Saturday, August 25.  The host school – the Rockford Rams – won the meet with a team score of 31 while Saline tallied 47 for 2nd, and Grand Ledge finished 3rd with 50.  Seven Division I teams competed in the first ever Rockford Invitational  The meet was unique in that the Saline varsity runners actually ran in two separate races – a junior/senior race and a freshman/sophomore race.  Each school was allowed 5 entries in each race, and then the places of the top 3 runners from each team in each race were added to determine each team’s final score.

Saline’s scorers in the junior/senior race were Lindsey Cummings – 6, Meagan Creutz – 8, and Rachel Jackson – 9.  In the freshman/sophomore race, Saline scorers were Alex Leptich – 3, Kate Carter – 5, and Chelsie Noble – 16.  Adding up these 6 places gave Saline its 47 point total.

After nearly a week of steady rain, the Rockford course was muddy in places and not extremely fast, but the Saline varsity runners turned in some good early season times considering the conditions.  The times might have been particularly good considering the girls’ team had to leave Saline at 5:00 a.m. to make the 2 1/2 hour trip to the suburbs of Grand Rapids in order to be there for the 9:30 start time.  Rockford, who beat Saline by 1 point in last year’s State Meet, will become a regular opponent of the Hornets over the next few weeks as they will clash in the Bath Invitational (Sept. 8) and then again at the MSU Spartan Invitational (Sept. 14).
