Portage Invitational

2007 THE TRADITION CONTINUES

Conditions:  88 degrees, humid, brutal

Outstanding Performers
Kate Carter Erin Dowling

They were brave women. They ran with heart. They were warriors and held tough in the face of daunting conditions. They were prepared and they won. CHAMPIONS. It was a grueling and glorious day.

As was stated in The Ann Arbor News, “The Portage Invitational is regarded as the premier regular season cross country event in the state.” It was 88 degrees, humid and brutal. Seven of the current top 10 ranked teams in Division I were in the race. “The Saline girls edged Brighton, 110-114, for the Div. I title. It was the Hornets first victory there in a decade of trying. They have finished as high as second.” Other top scores include Grand Haven 117; TC Central 124; and Rockford 185.

262 runners participated representing 38 teams which makes Portage a fair amount larger event than the State Meet. Three of our athletes ran 19:36 and under and nearly all of the top 5 had a finish clocking of sub 20:00 on a day when the times were easily 30-40 seconds slower than normal. The heat was so horrendous that the JV races were canceled mid-afternoon.

It is with a great sense of pride an honor that the times of Saline’s Varsity women are announced as follows:

Alex Leptich placed 5th overall in 18:48; Kate Carter 11th in 19:08; Rachel Jackson 19th in 19:36; Lindsey Cummings 34th place in 20:00; Kari Frank 41st in 20:10; Erin Dowling 69th in 20:41; Meagan Creutz crossed 115th in 21:39. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

They came and conquered and the quest for bigger and better things continues…
